Glaucoma destroys the optic nerve silently: by the time a patient notices, 40% of the fibres are already lost, and they do not come back. OCT measures nerve fibre thickness to the micron and detects damage years before the visual field does. We recommend this screening from forty, and from thirty-five where there is a family history. The unit also performs day-case cataract surgery with multifocal implants.
